We recently released a series of articles explaining the implementation of Industry 4.0 in Brazil. To follow up on this matter, this Khomp Blog post will discuss the agribusiness revolution enabled by technologies that make connections and communications more efficient in the field, such as using the LoRa™ protocol in Agriculture 4.0 and its applications in the Internet of things (IoT).
Fundamentals of Agriculture 4.0
The 4.0 era is providing human society with access to digital technology applications in virtually all contexts. By analyzing the agribusiness landscape, the new technologies make processes more efficient and competitive.
Machines such as drones and tractors, and even technology used for bio development, cause impacts in the areas of Economics and Communications, creating a connection between men, machines, and nature.
Currently, Brazil is one of the major powers in the agribusiness sector due to the massive use of technologies developed for the field since the Revolution 4.0, and this indicates an investment opportunity.
According to Maurício Antônio Lopes, president of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), the main benefit of this trend for the industry is the accuracy it provides to a field where there are so many variables to deal with (such as climate).
In an interview for the Canavieiros Magazine, the executive predicts that the future of the agribusiness will be marked by digital transformation and its impacts on automation.
LoRa™ Protocol in the context of the agribusiness industry
LoRa™ is the acronym for Long Range, as it allows communications over long distances through radio frequency.
Just like the ZigBee and Bluetooth protocols, which are best suited for IoT applications over short distances, LoRa™ has been widely accepted worldwide, mainly because of its ability to operate with minimum energy consumption.
“In agribusiness, where you have to collect lots of pieces of information over greater distances, that is, the data points for analysis tend to be considerably far from the operation site, the LoRa™ protocol is the best suited alternative,” says Sandro Kirchner, Development Manager at Khomp.
Its main applications are related to the Internet of Things. Due to its long reach, ease of development, low battery consumption, and low implementation costs, the LoRa™ protocol has been used in Agriculture 4.0 mainly for the development of IoT networks.
The LoRa™ technology is what gives you access to these systems. In the context of Agribusiness, interconnection and communication between machines and devices is one of the main benefits of using this technology.
According to Kirchner, “Khomp is investing in these scenarios by developing specific solutions, such as the telemetry gateway, which can be used in both Agribusiness and Industry 4.0, and also in the so-called Smart Cities.”
